Gender Equality in Relationships

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO, I CAN DO BETTER!

This video explains the simple phrase that resonates with many of us because of the memories it brings back from childhood and some go through this today. Today, gender equality has gotten out of control with branding and labels.

Do I think women can work in sports? YES. Do I believe women should be paid the same? YES.

Historically, women have faced many difficulties through systematic discrimination, limiting their options and opportunities. These areas included education, employment, political participation and life in general. Most women's societal attitude changed upon learning the limitations their predecessors had. Changing the family dynamic and women working outside of the home has influenced attitude and certain expectations regarding women's roles.

Feminism is real! However, feminism does not need to be shoved in people's faces. I think women should have the same opportunity as all people do. That being said, people need to fully understand their relationship and their partner's needs. I believe in tradition which means men and women have their respective roles in a relationship, as individuals and as parents. Creating roles early in a relationship and having this difficult conversation also creates boundaries. Most people in a relationship probably cannot remember one time when I changed my oil or a tire. In exchange, most men have no idea the stove cleans itself or the reason for putting baking soda in the fridge. I believe in tradition, I believe in there are "men roles" and "women roles" because there are things my parents taught me and not my brothers. The New York Times stress this topic in how relationships can make or break based on communication with roles. Roles are very important in relationships and this is one reason relationships thrive.

Secondly, there is always a personal preference because each relationship differs. Some women think they make the world go around. Being a strong and independent woman is important because you should not let anyone define you, especially not your partner. Most women find fulfillment and satisfaction in playing a role they believe contributes to boosting their ego. Every person is unique, which is important to understand. Encouraging women to pursue their passions requires flexibility is the modern-day way of expression.

My family dynamic is very generic; my dad is a medical doctor and my mom stays at home and is not employed. I was adopted from Texas with my twin sister and I have three older brothers. Growing up, my mom was always in charge of cooking, cleaning, laundry and everything in the house. Outside of the house, my dad took care of the yard, the cars and grilling. To me, this is the basic dynamic of a family because their jobs rarely overlapped. My sister and I were taught the tasks of my mom and my brothers were taught the tasks my dad took care of.

Because of my upbringing, I do NOT anticipate changing my car's oil or any tire in my near future. I do not trust any man to cook or bake better than I can, unless he is chef. I think men should mow the lawn and I think women should be in the kitchen. Does this back date me about fifty years? Probably. Do I honestly care? Absolutely not.

It is important to note the belief of women can do anything a man can do is not about asserting dominance. Women will continue to face barriers and discrimination because the fight means there is a driving force for continued progress.
